"Loggers To Pay $133,000 For Mental Stress"

Five protesters were awarded a total of $133,000 damages for psychological injury after a Supreme Court judges ruled loggers had caused them mental distress in an Otway Ranges standoff.

Loggers and environmentalists both claimed victory after a bitter 10 month battle.

The Wilderness Society will also have to pay loggers $45,000 after settling a claim for loss of income caused a by a protest in a logging coupe near Beech Forest in 1999.

The courts heard loggers harassed the group by shining floodlights on their camp and banging large fuel drums all night to prevent them sleeping.

Greens Senator Bob Brown hailed the decision as a landmark for the rights of conservationists to camp and protest peacefully.

CFMEU representative, Michael O'Connor, also claimed the decision as a victory for timber workers.
